FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SEATTLE, WA – Seattle Social Housing (SSH) is announcing an open process to identify individuals and/or organizations to help select a new board member, specifically representing the community development sector. This follows the departure of one of the organizations originally designated to make appointments to SSH’s board, as outlined in the organization’s charter, adopted through Initiative 135.
Initiative 135 mandates that the SSH Board reflect the diversity of those economically impacted by housing displacement, and this process will allow for both organizations and individuals to be nominated for a seat representing the community development sector.
Criteria for Nominations: To be considered, the new nominee (whether an individual or an organization) must meet the following criteria:
Representation: Align with the economic demographics described in SSH’s charter, particularly those displaced from housing or earning less than half the area median income.
Experience: Demonstrate advocacy or service experience in community development, housing, labor, racial justice, or related fields.
Community Trust: Be trusted within the community, with a commitment to equity and inclusion.
Capacity: Have the resources and ability to identify and recommend qualified board members.
Mission Alignment: Align with SSH’s mission to foster social housing and equitable development.
Process for Selecting the New Nominee:
Notification: SSH will notify stakeholders and the public about the search for a new board member representative from the community development sector.
Call for Nominations: SSH will issue an open invitation for both individuals and organizations to apply or nominate others.
Review & Shortlisting: A review committee composed of SSH representatives and key stakeholders will evaluate all nominations based on the above criteria and create a shortlist of potential candidates.
Final Selection: SSH’s board will make the final selection based on the review committee’s recommendations and public input.
This open process ensures transparency, broad community involvement, and the selection of a qualified individual or organization that can effectively contribute to SSH’s mission of social housing and equitable development.
